Lead Testing Update! Additional Important Information!
5/19/2017 11:35:25 AM

Dear Healthcare Provider,

Centers for Disease Control has issued an Advisory related to lead blood testing. It is now believed that the vacutainer used is not at fault as previously communicated by the FDA. It is now being communicated that the LeadCare analyzer should no longer be used with venous blood samples.

In light of this new information, we have changed our procedure for lead testing and will be sending samples to ARUP.  Please read the details here regarding specimen collection and the acceptable vacutainers for lead testing sample collection and review the CDC Advisory for additional information.

Thank you,
PCL Alverno

PCL Alverno December 2016 Test Bulletin
12/9/2016 2:23:57 PM

Dear Healthcare Provider,

The December 2016 Test Bulletin is available for you. This bulletin includes an update on specimen collection regarding nasal E-Swabs for MRSA and self-collection of GC/Chlamydia swabs.

PCL Alverno would like to remind you that recovery of E. coli 0:157 requires special media.  A standard stool culture is not designed to isolate the E. coli 0:157 pathogen. The ordering and/or collecting staff are key in recognizing the clinical need for this test.  Once specimens are sent to the laboratory in tinted Cary-Blair transport media, it is difficult to determine the nature of the original specimen.
It is best practice for the ordering provider to add an E. coli 0:157 culture to all bloody stools.

Reference ranges have been updated for several therapeutic drugs and for pediatric results.

Please review the HIV confirmation reporting update.

We wish you happy holidays!
